He is stuck driving on the open road,
his father helped build before he was born,
racing his motorcycle with the wind,
ever searching for angel of the sky
past a thousand small nowhere country towns.
She is stuck working at the restaurant
her father has owned since her mother died,
aching for someone to take her away,
but brings food to dull faces with blank eyes,
bored stiff in the small nowhere country town.
He stops into the restaurant where she works
and gazes lost in the ache of her eyes,
then orders hamburger and fries with beer,
but stares out the window at silent trees,
heart numb in the small nowhere country town.
She brings his order, and lingers nearby,
heart beating with desire to fly away,
then praises the motorcycle he drives,
and asks how far down the road he has gone,
gasping in the small nowhere country town.
He mumbles in his burger, I forget
where I came from or where I want to go,
but I must go till I find my lost heart,
then gazes in her eyes with aching hope,
passing through the small nowhere country town.
She gazes in the deep lake of his eyes,
then walks away to ignore desperate hope,
but returns with more coffee for his cup,
and smiles tense, so where are you going now,
still trapped in the small nowhere country town.
He reaches out and takes her trembling hand,
and whispers, I am going to the stars,
but I cannot leave the Earth without you,
so come with me and hold me in your arms
to escape this small nowhere country town.
She wraps her arms around his beating heart
as he drives motorcycle fast as wind
along the road winding around the world,
soaring on wings of love up to the stars,
far beyond the small nowhere country town.
He was lost on the highway of grim hope,
she was stuck in the small town of numb fear,
but together they explore the strange world,
then settle down in a home by the lake
with kids in the small nowhere country town.
