Realm Of Ideas

Realm Of Ideas

The Realm of Ideas, where eternal forms
provide changeless patterns for changing matter,
operates within the neurons of our brains
and not, as Plato argued long ago,
outside crystal shells surrounding the World.

Atoms cluster in complex molecules
connecting based on number of electrons,
linked in carbon rings to weave protein strings
that organize themselves in single cells
which evolve into thinking organisms.

Chemicals transform into organisms
that constitute vast variety of shapes,
but more efficient systems survive well
to generate more models of themselves
while they consume the less efficient forms.

Once we evolve fish to lizard to mouse
to monkey to man, when we walk upright
and signify objects with spoken words,
we observe the world as it exists now,
teeming with more successful forms of life.

Noting patterns that repeat with each form,
we invent words to signify ideas
by expressing the conceptual word Tree
to signify all real trees that exist
so we can talk to each other about trees.

We invent language with strict set of words
that refer to each idea we perceive,
different objects, actions, and qualities,
therefore existing things manifest first,
then we make language to signify things.

Plato believed ideas are more real
than material objects forming their shapes,
insisting that the divine Craftsman God
molds existing things from changeless ideas,
so ideas persist though things come and go.

We humans design ideas in our brains,
inventing words to signify ideas,
so now we can employ language of words
to investigate chemical interactions
and comprehend why certain forms exist.

Why do specific organic forms thrive
and persist strong for many generations,
some changing forms while some remain the same,
based on how chemicals construct our forms
so perceptive brains evolve from the sea?

We stand together on the ocean shore
and hear the ancient song of swirling waves
that vibrates in the pulsing of our cells
so we sing ancient melody of truth
as we make love where the moon shimmers bright.
