Ode To The Farmer Of Wheat

Though she receives no word of gratitude
when she labors tending wheat in hot fields
for cooks to bake bread that people eat,
I rejoice that people we love eat well
when we gather at sunset by bright hearths
to feast and share stories of our perceptions.
She plows moist soil of the Earth with sharp hope,
she scatters seeds of truth from generous hands,
she pulls weeds of despair with blistered fingers,
she irrigates fields from rivers of tears,
and walks among stalks of wheat in warm wind,
whispering secrets of our lives to their ears.
Mute farmer of wheat, who stands on high hill,
gazing at the sky for clouds that bring rain,
you transform woods tangled with choking weeds
into open fields shining gold with wheat
that feeds huge bellies of humanity,
so we adore you, Goddess of Gold Wheat.
Since your mother first gathered seeds of wheat,
and planted them in neat rows by the river,
you taught us how to tend fields of gold wheat,
so we spread out to colonize the world,
replacing wilderness with fields of wheat
till all the world shimmers with their bright glow.
We bring carts of wheat to warehouse of stone
where the Loaf-Ward, we elected our Lord
to guard garden of wheat from hungry thieves,
exchanges gold coin for each bag of gold,
so when we return in the winter months
we can buy loaves of bread for family feast.
Now that one farmer tends vast fields of wheat,
using cows to plow and fertilize soil,
we can make crafts and clothes with our skilled hands,
and we can build schools to educate children,
as we transform our village into empire
with kings leading armies to rule the world.
Thanks to wheat that energizes our souls
we expand beyond walls of paradise
to explore the wilderness of wild beasts
and map the contours of our spinning world
till we transform many nations of tribes
in one global society based on peace.
Wise farmer of wheat, Goddess of Cereal,
give every person on Earth loaf of bread
so they have nutritious food to eat well
with each spin of our world around the sun
so we live united in peaceful love
to feast and share stories of our perceptions.
