Wind shimmers over jagged ice-cracked rocks
and tousles the long hair of the old man
who huddles on the towering mountain slope
while peering through the long lens camera.
He thinks about the white kitten he got
when he was twelve, whose gold eyes seared his heart
with tender love, then how it was run over
by the speeding car, and how long he wept.
Far across the valley of broken rocks
where the thin silver river flashes clear,
he sees emerge from shadows of lost hope
the snow leopard with fierce eyes shining gold.
Holding his breath as he gazes with awe,
he watches the ghost cat glide like sunlight,
then savors elegant grace of its motion
that ripples like sunlit waves of the ocean.
Before the lithe snow leopard vanishes
back into the shadows of the lost world,
he snaps photograph to catch its fleet soul,
as if one could capture essence of light.
