Superhero Of The World

What sorrows are we hoping to evade
by expressing beautiful fantasies
about superpowerful people who fight
monstrous demons of their alternate selves
to save weak humanity from itself
in massive fights that destroy half the world?
Whether Apollo battles Dionysus,
Jesus battles Satan, Thor battles Loki,
or Superman battles Zod, the good man
battles the evil man over who reigns
as leader of the nation through election
when we choose the man with the better plan.
Every generation since we were mice,
crawling up the giant peaks of Guilin,
the man who is stronger, faster, and wittier,
impregnates more women with their wiser offspring
so we compete with each other in fierce game
over who will play leader of the tribe.
Two men face each other in war for power,
competing to enforce their different rules,
one man seeking to control minds of people
by forcing them to work for his own gain,
and one man seeking to teach minds of people
to better themselves and rule their own lives.
Herakles strides forth from temple of Zeus
to battle the dragon who devours people
then slays the monster with sharp shining sword
he forged from the star that fell from the sky,
noble hero whose children rule the world,
crowning themselves kings over every nation.
We fantasize that the good-hearted man
with superhuman strength will fight our demons
to protect our food-producing machine
so we can feast in the hall of lost tales,
secure in peace of our world-ruling empire
as he wears the crown of enlightenment.
Cease to look up into the empty sky
to find the superhero of the world
who will never swoop down from shining clouds
to destroy the oppressors of mankind,
for we are the ones who must defeat tyrants,
fighting together for democracy.
