Gripping hammer and chisel in both hands,
the woodcarver carves from block of wood
intricate scene showing Odin and Frigga
hosting generous feast for gods in Asgard,
Balder and Nanna with their wise son Njordher,
Tiwaz wielding spear with his sweet wife Zisa,
Sunna and Skadhi holding plates of food,
Fulla and Gerdher, Jorth with her son Thor,
Idunna bearing basket of ripe apples,
and Bragi strumming the harp as he sings.
After blowing last sawdust from the tablet,
Wotan steps back and gazes at the image
carved from memories of his carefree childhood
when his father and mother hosted gods
before they were all killed in bloody war
when Karolus, the king wearing gold crown,
chopped down the sacred Song Tree of Irmina,
and forced survivors to convert or die,
while he fled with his gentle sister Freya
across the sea to misty Avalon.
Caressing small face of each family member,
Wotan weeps on the shore of River Avon
that sparkles in the glow of summer sun,
but when his black-haired wife appears from woods,
bearing basket heaped with eggs, nuts, and herbs,
he wipes his eyes to hide his tears from her,
then smiles when she leans against his broad chest
and her black eyes gaze in his sky-blue eyes,
to whisper, "Though you miss your family
I am honored to be wife of your hearth."
Caressing red-skinned face of his lithe wife,
Wotan smiles, beaming with joy at her words,
then whispers as he kisses her full lips,
"Though my family is gone they live in me,
and you are now the family I want,
sweet Brigit with eyes black as starry night,
for we together live in our young children,
Turan and Sulis, who preserve our souls,
to embody your skill at cooking food
and my skill at building boats from strong wood."
While they all sit together by the hearth
and feast on rabbit stew and apple cider,
they tell stories about daily adventures
exploring misty woods of Avalon,
then eat apples and sing in twilight glow
as stars twinkle above the flowing stream,
then Wotan holds Brigit in loving arms,
and they kiss as the moon glows on their souls,
so he smiles, "I will carve new family tablet
showing us living by the River Avon."
