Where War Refugees Wander

The voodoo spirit in the words you sing
accelerate the anguish of my wing
so I step out the door of ecstasy
and do my duty to transcend our fate.
Beyond the boundaries of the world we know
where I leave footsteps in the melting snow
I bring apple pie to Lady Liberty
who teaches me to transform love from hate.
We are the children of the mocking clown
who parades naked through capitol town
to rule our land with tyranny of greed
till we decide to hang him on the cross.
I summarize our civil war with tune
that taints our aching romance with the moon
since Tree of Knowledge grows from careless seed
thrown in the mud that chronicles our loss.
I ride the train from sea to shining sea
and sing forgotten river melody
that rises from the swamp of hungry hearts
where war refugees wander signless roads.
I know the reason why you want to die
when angry men steal apple of your eye
since all your treasures lost in broken carts
are hidden in lines of computer codes.
The oldest woman in the world designs
directions no one follows on the signs
that trace the road of victory in war
beyond the crumbling walls of paradise.
I code new law tradition of the song
that hides in ballads game of right and wrong
so when you see Soul of Life on sea shore
you will hear wisdom in her sage advice.
How can we encapsulate on blank page
the anguished spirit of our modern age
embodied in the fool who rules the world
by shouting insults from his tiny brain?
The scapegoat of the sacrificial rite
embodies vile sins of our national blight
so we gather where our flag flies unfurled
to celebrate our triumph in the rain.
Emerging from the coffin of my church,
I keep watch from my high pyramid perch
over game of life in America
like wizard orchestrating song of lust.
Where war refugees wander in my head
I dance and chant spells with the grateful dead
reborn from words of esoterica
for we are angels crumbling back to dust.
