What Role I Play

What Role I Play

The universe of interacting atoms
exists in solid flow of energy
whether or not creatures with conscious brains
perceive or understand its operations.

Our eyes perceive the qualities of objects,
our ears hear sounds that moving objects vibe,
and our hands manipulate solid objects
to consume food that nourishes our bodies.

Our brains assemble sensual information,
designing ideas to classify things
and organize perceptions in clear concepts
which conjure virtual models of real objects.

We see many objects that look alike
so we invent the idea of that thing
and devise the word as sound our mouths make
to signify the object we perceive.

The poet organizes words in verse,
describing objects and their qualities
and how they interact on stage of space,
to build ontology of standard truth.

The physicist measures existing objects
and studies forces of cause and effect
how actions cause construction and destruction
to formulate laws that describe real facts.

The seer expresses vision of clear action
that each person of the tribe can perform
to better produce the shelter and food
which keeps us all alive in hostile world.

The priest cooks meat of animals on flames,
preparing food to energize our bodies,
then in the temple hall muses sing stories
of heroes whose actions guide how we live.

We gather in the temple every day
to feast on good food that wise priests prepare,
then watch actors play roles of culture heroes
who succeed or fail to generate children.

Each generation born from mating couples
inherits language from successful parents
in stories that present how to live well
and generate children before we die.

Stories of people who succeed or fail
accumulate in national myths of gods
compiled in holy books and epic poems
that bind our minds with one religious faith.

I walk the endless maze of city streets,
amazed at how we grew from tribes to empires
over ten thousand years of war and peace,
and wonder what role I play in my life.

Every object is structure made of atoms
so force of our actions will cause effects,
good of atoms assembling with construction
or bad of atoms breaking from destruction.

I study how my actions cause effects
so I can flow with quick currents of life
and create good things with my crafting hands,
which nurtures life as long as we can go.

All objects of atoms will fall apart
in natural process of chemical change
so I preserve quick life as best I can
since blank death will swallow us all in time.

I sing the life of the curious soul
who explores the nature of our vast world,
expressing vision of what we perceive,
so we can share the wisdom we attain.
