The boy slowly pedals his bicycle
along quiet winding suburban street
past silent houses and large empty lawns,
breathing scent of hot grass in summer sun.

Pausing at the intersection of streets
that stretch forever both ways in gold glow,
the boy can feel thousands of busy people
humming in the timeless shimmering air.

Racing swiftly down the long curving street,
the boy imagines himself a forest elf
steering his sleek starship through asteroids
while searching for the Book of Arcane Spells.

The shriek that pierces his heart with despair
sounds like the owl that lives down by the lake,
but when it dissolves to harsh angry sobs
he realizes some girl is getting hurt.

Dropping his quick bike on the hot sidewalk,
the boy runs behind the beautiful house
to see some older boy clutching the hips
of the young girl in her short yellow dress.

Squirming to escape the clutch of his hands,
the girl kicks his legs and claws at his arms,
but he whacks her head and squeezes her throat,
then pulls up her dress to expose her panties.

Rushing forward like Luke Skywalker, the boy
slams into the young man, knocking him down,
then rolls onto grass as the girl escapes,
and cheers when she runs safe into her house.

Growling in rage, the young man grabs his throat
and slams his face into dry prickly grass,
but he rolls away, jumping to his feet,
and turns to run back toward his swift starship.

Gasping for breath as he runs toward his bike,
the boy feels thrill of performing good deeds,
but the young man tackles him in the yard,
slamming his body hard on the sidewalk.

Searing pain tears through the spine of his back
as the man slams his face on hot cement,
so he screams like the horse with broken back
when the lion tears it down with sharp claws.

Struggling to escape the man on his back,
the boy howls in horrible pain that rips
fabric of his brain into shreds of light
as fists punch his head like an iron hammer.

Red and blue lights flash as police arrive
and arrest the man when he tries to run,
and the boy floats lost in sea of sharp pain,
falling forever into black nowhere.

The young girl in the yellow dress appears
from blazing flash of light, reaching her hands
to weave large white owl wings onto his back
so he can fly upward from deep abyss.

Opening his eyes in afternoon sun,
the boy in the wheel chair in the back yard,
under the shady tree in small pagoda,
stares at the tall glass if iced lemonade.

The girl in the yellow dress with long hair
and eyes bright blue as the infinite sky
walks toward him with his mother and his sister,
then she sits beside him and smooths her dress.

Smiling at him like an angel from Heaven,
the pretty girl opens the large black book
and begins to read from Lord of the Rings
when the elves lament the fall of Gandalf.

Gasping for breath, he reaches out his hand,
and manages to say, "Galadriel,"
then she looks up at him with startled eyes,
covering her mouth with her trembling hand.

Dropping the book in the hot summer grass,
the girl clutches his hand and starts to weep,
and caresses his cheek with gentle hands
as silver tears sparkle in her bright eyes.

"For ten years since that day you rescued me
I have come to read you your favorite tales,
but this is the first time you spoke to me,
so know that I love you with all my heart."

Gazing in the mystery of her blue eyes,
the boy smiles and clutches at her soft hands,
happy to have risen from the abyss
as she kisses him on the cheek and weeps.
