Through the war-shattered ruins of the city,
that once bustled with the music of life,
the pianist wanders in forlorn despair,
eyes shining with the memory of people
who were shipped on trains to the camps of death.

Wandering into the large mansion of stone,
where the duke once entertained the elite,
the pianist sits at the large piano
covered in dust in the abandoned hall
and stares down at the keys with trembling hands.

His fingers dance across the ivory keys
in elegant leaps of transcendent grace
to shoot arrows of notes at silent air
that spark rippling waves in sweet melodies
which spiral through shocked beauty of his eyes.

He is the spirit of music still alive,
though entire city of stone and desire
was bombed to broken rubble by blind greed,
so he plays songs of Beethoven and Chopin
which echo in silent abandoned streets.

The ghosts of his people gather to listen,
revived by the sorrow in every note
that flashes in eyes of innocent children
who rebuild on the ruins of Warsaw
and relax in concert hall where he plays.
