Birth Of Our Sun God

We saw the warm sun die and disappear
behind black clouds of brutal freezing winds,
and then after three days it rose reborn
and gleamed bright rays of warm refreshing light.
After meditating for three cold days
in mountain cave, the father of our tribe
emerged from leather flap with long wild hair
and sang enchanting tunes in the warm light.
It happens every year, the longest night,
when the sun dies and leaves the frozen world
plunged in icy darkness of bleak despair,
then he rises from death and restores life.
So though the world of hills with leafless trees
lies frozen under sheen of gleaming ice,
white as the moon on the blue moonless night,
the sun will rise from death and shine again.
Tonight we huddle together for warmth
in the cold gloom that seems to last forever,
shivering with fear, so naked in the dark,
but wait with faith for the sun will return.
The sun will rise again and light the world,
beaming warm rays that cause all seeds to sprout,
then we will dance again, singing with joy,
to celebrate the birth of our Sun God.
