Courage Of Immigrants

Courage Of Immigrants

Soft voice of old sand in hot desert wind
explains how far I still have to migrate
to find green pastures of the Promised Land
where I must pretend I am glory bound,
then circle wagons on the river shore
and pray to clouds that we suffer no more.

Harsh gears of truck engine grind with desire
when I shift passion of ambitious hope
and execute delivery of fresh meat
to hungry families on sun-sepia farms
because through wheel of fortune I control
bold apricity of this migrant life.

Enduring wild indifferent storms of fate
that Poseidon hurls at fragile wood ships,
we sail for Land of Liberty to live
free from exploitation of tyrants and kings
who conspire against us in castle towers,
till our grandsons become tyrants and kings.

Forever traveling west ten thousand miles
over ten thousand years of wagon wheels
turning through revolutions of desire,
we follow Helius shining in blue sky
to find the Promised Land of ancient myths
yet invade lush meadows where natives dwell.

What great lies of manifest destiny
our fathers told us by the crackling hearth
to justify invasion of new lands
because we escape tyranny of greed
to play oppressors in the Promised Land
on which we build empire of bloody flags.

Across gold dusty hills of Idaho
I drive large metal truck of grinding gears,
powered by engine that Barsanti designed,
loaded full with slabs of delicious beef
which bankers and farmers feast on with pride
that we rule the world through democracy.

Soldiers stand at attention in straight lines
at the training camp under silver skies,
English, Irish, German, French, African,
and Indian warriors, equal in one squad
of loyalty to our Land of Liberty
where every human should always live free.

Enslavers, fascists, and nationalist goons
have fallen before courage of our strength,
immigrants from lands of tyrants and kings
who fight together with united heart
to maintain justice and liberty for all
till every human on this Earth lives free.

  1. My mother's mother's father drove a meat-delivery truck in Boise, Idaho in the 1930s after his parents migrated from Missouri to Idaho by wagon train in the 1880s.
