Sea Of Tranquility

Sea Of Tranquility

On the front lawn of my suburban home
I eat a hot dog and gaze at the moon
while my family inside watch television
as Neil Armstrong steps to the dusty moon.

The moonlight shines on my blue Coupe de Ville
so I slip inside and cruise down the road,
gliding past houses where windows glow blue
from flickering light of television screens.

I roll the window down and tap the door
and wind blows my hair while Bob Dylan sings
Like a Rolling Stone on the Radio,
so I sing along loud, "How does it feel!"

The new generation of wandering souls,
who rise from the cradle of two world wars,
rebel against repression of free will
with something to say, not something to sell.

Down by the river in silver moonlight
I park my Coupe de Ville by willow tree
and walk in shadows of the silent night,
searching for the ache that eats at my heart.

Drum beats echo weird through the river woods
so I walk toward the golden light of hope
and step into the ring of long-haired hippies
who welcome me into their hidden haven.

The blonde girl who painted flowers on her jeans
rolls a joint and sparks it with a twig flame,
then passes it around so we all puff,
and I see fairies sprouting from her hair.

The curly-haired boy with the knowing grin
strums guitar that vibrates the shining breeze
with rainbows spiraling from flashing stars
as he sings with the voodoo voice of angels.

"I was born in the television tube
like Serpent of Eden breaking glass egg
so I hide angel wings under my coat
from the vampire in the gray flannel suit.
I am the diamond that sprouts from the cube
since America is a powder keg
that explodes from the prophecy I wrote
about the girl who plays the crystal flute.
Come with me and we shall walk on the moon,
then make love by Sea of Tranquility."

"I am the rocket man soaring in space,
and when I look back at the spinning Earth
I want to find Heaven among the stars
but I float nowhere for ten million years.
Nobody knows who will win the space race
since I rise from the dead in second birth
to walk naked on the highway of cars
and offer thirsty souls my loving tears.
Come with me and we shall walk on the moon,
then make love by Sea of Tranquility."

"We are the zombies who rise from the grave
to follow the resurrected Sky King,
assassinated by the laughing clown
while he rode high in his chariot of fire.
When Plato leads us from the temple cave
to show us shadows cast by the real thing,
I wear the mask of my nervous breakdown
to keep watch high by the pyramid pyre.
Come with me and we shall walk on the moon,
then make love by Sea of Tranquility."

"I lead you laughing through the labyrinth
to see faces of dead gods we adore
who live again in friends we never meet
till you find yourself in the mirror eye.
I pick fresh stalks of purple hyacinth
for the goddess I meet on the sea shore
who explains my world view is obsolete
then teaches me how to chant spells and fly.
Come with me and we shall walk on the moon,
then make love by Sea of Tranquility."

We all applaud his haunting magic spell
then pass the sizzling joint around again
and I see visions flashing from my eyes
that replay the whole strange history of mankind.

The girl with silver eyes takes my shy hand
then we sit and kiss on the flowered shore,
so we make love while the river sings stars
and I fall nine days and nights in her eyes.

I glide on angel wings above the world
but wake at dawn alone on the lush shore
and wonder if my fairy was a dream
while I drive to work at the car garage.

I dream about the moonlight in her eyes
while I fix the sputtering engines of cars
then drive to the willow tree by the river
and sit on the hood, staring at blue water.
