River Of Etymonia

After Martin paints every street sign blank
on every street corner in the lost city
to erase the names of people long dead
he changes his name to the primal Em.
Arriving at church where his mother prays,
Em stands before wood statue of dead god
his family worshipped for a thousand years
then sets it on fire to burn it to ash.
Turning around, Em looks at their shocked faces,
then spreads both arms wide and smiles at them all,
presenting himself as god resurrected,
but they crucify him on the new cross.
After hanging on the old rugged cross
for a thousand years of religious wars,
watching them kill souls who will not believe,
Em breaks free and walks busy city streets.
Nameless people drive up and down streets,
racing in circles to perform their roles
scripted by the man in the glass bank tower
who makes them all dance like puppets on strings.
Em vows to challenge the king of the money
and wanders on in Somewhere City, lost
in the labyrinth of mirrors that reflect
hopes and dreams in masks that conceal their faces.
Em fails to remove from nerves of his face
the mask of the messiah who dies for all
so they follow him through the wilderness
where the weird wizard El sings in dream cave.
Kneeling before El in the cave of dreams,
Em asks him about the meaning of life
so he explains that we invent our meaning
thus we must choose how we will change our ways.
Pointing to the empty sky of blue light,
El pushes Em off the high mountain peak
so he falls nine days and nights without wings
to fall in the sea where Icarus drowned.
Cast down from Heaven on last crystal shell,
Em swims from the abyss of nameless fear
and crawls up the river of eager hope
to stand by the tree of sensible truth.
Walking along River of Etymonia,
Em touches every object he perceives
and bestows on it the name he invents
while the indifferent sun shines on it all.
Em paints the names of people who once lived
on every blank street sign in the lost city
and changes his name to Master of Death
then sits by the river to catch his breath.
