Social Power Of Art

Social Power Of Art

Brown nuthatch chirping in the chestnut tree
tells me the woman with long writhing hair,
who sits like toadstool on lush river shore,
desires to regenerate from rich mud
new body for our immortal gene-souls,
so I give her bowl of oranges to eat.

Though everyone calls me Phoebus the Prim,
because I like to wear tweed suit and vest,
pale green shirt ironed with attentive care,
and tie striped purple and gold, I express
my playful self with yellow bowler hat
stuck with three feathers from the brown nuthatch.

Offering yellow rose with respectful bow,
though my polished shoes squish in river mud,
I ask Gorgon if she would like to go
attend the art gallery show with me,
and she grins, while painting her eyelids gold,
that she would be delighted to join me.

We must present an interesting sight
to people as we stroll the avenue,
tall thin blond bard in glasses and tweed suit
holding hands in natural intimacy
with short plump dreadlock witch in kente gown
and necklace of nine chakra healing stones.

We are two angels from contrasting lands,
rugged snowy mountains of Germany,
graceful sandy wave-washed beaches of Ghana,
who found each other, drawn by mutual charm,
while in the library reading art books,
Phoebus and Gorgon with hearts bound by love.

Sipping wine as we drift with quiet crowd
past large canvases of colorful shapes,
we find ourselves drawn with deep interest
to painting that depicts lush farm landscape
where blacks and whites picking apples from trees
all dance together at the evening feast.

Standing close together as we hold hands,
frail sun god from bright ethereal sky
and strong earth goddess from dank river shore,
we sigh with longing of our hopeful hearts
that such idyllic scenes of harmony
could be real in this world of fearful hate.

Soulmates entwined with red ribbon of fate,
that we choose to weave binding our two hearts,
we stroll together in soft twilight glow
to eat spaghetti and hot apple pie
at river-walk cafe, faces moon bright
as we discuss social power of art.

  1. Orpheus paints portrait of the interracial couple and their two children as they play together in the park by the river.
