Sweet music of voices that once sang free
in pleasant harmony of blooming trees
have long faded in moaning of the wind,
silenced by grinding of harsh engine growls,
so when I walk vast maze of city streets
I hear no people singing from their hearts.

With awkward steps of syncopated rhyme
I stumble dazed out of tune with the times,
heart racing with hip-hopping beat of rap
where frenzied crowds with roar of aching hearts
jump up and down in Dionysian rites
to channel psychic energy of rage.

No prim Apollo in elegant suit
croons graceful melodies of hopeful love
with soul-expanding wail of saxophones,
and heart-enchanting keen of violins,
while gripping microphone of holy faith
in fertile beauty of romantic trust.

For long eerie laments of ocean waves,
inspiring shanties of sea-surfing mates,
shook walls of taverns bracing wooden docks,
but now dull vibe of pulsing technobeats
rock crumbling walls of gutted factories
where leather-coated punks snort angel dust.

Down by the sparkling lake of leaping fish,
beneath the willow tree where swans reside,
young swain plucks jaunty banjo tunes of joy
while maid in frilly dress with ribboned hat
sings sweet love song with twitter-piping voice
to celebrate their loyal marriage vows.

High on spotlit stage in huge stadium
hardrocker in blue jeans and tattered shirt
twangs electric guitar with fierce respect
while singing anthem of the lonely soul
about his quest to find queen of his heart
still running far where the streets have no name.

Angelic choir of teachers, salesmen, cooks,
accountants, mechanics, and policemen,
dressed in long white robes, stand in curving rows
and sing loud in crowded tabernacle hall
grand oratorio for world messiah
that swells with glory to storm-flashing clouds.

Bearded scribe with tablet and raven quill
transcribes with runes of universal thought
lyrics and notes of every holy song
ever expressed in history of the world
by people longing to transcend despair,
and stores them in Library of the Heart.
