Twilight Of My Mortal Life

Twilight Of My Mortal Life

In the long twilight of our endless life
that ends in soft silence of nothingness,
after mountain rapids of our frantic youth
we drift on broad delta of solitude
in calm acceptance of our final death
after working to help build state of peace.

Through all the twists and turns of random fate,
where we find ourselves on some crowded stage
stuck in uncontrolled drama of weird scenes
that leave us wounded in miserable pride,
we progress toward achievement of success
that we define after we have arrived.

While wandering nowhere on the signless road
as I hitchhike from sea to shining sea,
from Oregon east to the fantasy land
where my ancestors first arrived from far
across the sea four hundred years ago,
I follow unseen spirit of my heart.

Only now, after more than sixty years,
can I pause in the Shaconage Hills
and look back on random road of my life
to see the goal for which I always strived
as Guiding Star that lead me to this place
since I create my fate with each new choice.

Blue mist of evening floats among tall oaks,
refracting sunlight through unmoving leaves
which casts eerie glow on walls of my home
in which I see bright vision of my heart
beamed clear as angel of my aptitude
who commissioned quest of my stoic heart.

Clear vision glows still in my aging heart
how wise Athena on angelic wings
appeared to me thirty-one years ago
as flash of lightning in Seattle rain
to give me crystal tablet of world truth
with quest to map whole history of the Earth.

Bearing Lyre of Hermes and Globe of Krates,
I journey east across Zarathia
to weave time-animated globe of Earth
from tangled threads of mythic memories
so we can see grand journey of our souls
as we evolve four hundred million years.

My own brief journey on this spinning globe
has been straightforward in its curving path
across the varied landscapes of my hopes
from Oregon to find lost Avalon
that shines now only in my wordless dreams
in the long twilight of my mortal life.

  1. Orpheus cradles lyre of Mercury as he gazes up at the godless sky while boat of his life drifts listlessly on the delta of old age.
