Ghost Cry Of Clouds

I hear the ghost cry of clouds in the sky
calling my true name when I question why
I must suffer the beauty of my pain
as I wander nameless in laughing rain.
I know the sorrow of the evening star
that leads my aching heart to wander far
beyond the village where my soul was born
and by the wild restless sea sing forlorn.
I know not what I am looking for here
as I wander through dark caverns of fear
where the ancient song of the sea calls me
till I find some long-forgotten tower key.
I remember these glowing beams of light
that flash on dark cavern walls of my sight
as if I lived in this cave long ago
to hear again the singing sea waves flow.
My mother fled here from the tower of stone,
bearing me in her trembling arms alone,
and here we lived in the glow of sunrays,
eating fish we roasted in star-bright blaze.
She died and dissolved into the gold sand
so I stared weeping at my tiny hand,
then wandered back along the forest trail
to find the tower where I began to wail.
The bearded wizard scooped me in his arms
and made me laugh by singing silly charms,
and there I lived for twenty summers now,
helping him brew potions and milk the cow.
Why did my mother flee the wizard tower,
I ponder, gazing at the spiral flower,
for here beside the sea I feel at home,
but stuck in my tower room I long to roam.
I hear the ghost cry of clouds in the sky
so I gaze upward where the free birds fly
and wonder at the great size of all things
which I could observe if I had hawk wings.
How far from the stone tower could I explore
before I return to its secure door
to understand the nature of the world
and discover where the dragon lies curled?
The ghost cry of the clouds now calls my name
so I leave my father in window frame
and follow strange adventure of my heart
to measure the whole world on my small chart.
Forward into swirling mist I now go
to follow close the winding river flow
upward to the mountain peak in the sky
where I can see the world and ponder why.
